Many people visit their GP with back pain, hip or other joint pain and are recommended gentle exercise 'like yoga'. But the truth is, yoga is a broad and deep field of movement science & philosophy and not all types of yoga are suitable for all bodies or all ages. General group classes of 'yoga flow', 'hatha yoga' or even 'gentle yoga' may not be right for you as they already require a decent range of movement in order to participate.
The Confident Movement Method™ is a yoga-based programme but created especially for older adults, those with arthritis, those who have trepidation about exercise or have limited mobility.
The programme aims to bring you back to your body, so you feel more comfortable and confident in it! so that it supports and sustains you now and in the future.
You may for example, be concerned about falling as you get older, about feeling too stiff to do activities you enjoy such as gardening, about your posture deteriorating...You may be worried about not having the flexibility to tie shoelaces, get up from the floor or climb stairs.
These are all things we can take for granted in our youth, but can make an enormous difference to our quality of life when we're older.
The Confident Movement Method™ combines mat and chair-based exercises accessible to all.
Inspired by yoga poses and sequences, but tailored and modified, the movements relieve stiffness, support the joints, improve balance & coordination and develop core stability.
Breathing exercises create a sense of safety and ease so that you feel supported and learn to trust your body again.
Mindful awareness improves posture so that you carry yourself comfortably and confidently.
Relaxation techniques inspire calm and clarity that permeates your daily life.
1) Pain Relief & Ease: Reduced joint discomfort so daily movement feels safe and natural.
2) Strength & Stability: Improved posture, balance, coordination and muscle tone that supports long-term mobility.
3) Confidence & Joy in Movement: Reconnection to your body, trust in your ability to move, and a renewed sense of vitality.
Sian runs yoga classes in the Sutton Coldfield community, and has done for the past seven years. She also teaches at studios, gyms and has worked with companies that include Ikea and Miller Homes; and athletes including Birmingham and West Midlands Ladies Football Club and the elite gymnastics squad in Victoria, Australia.
Sian’s approach to yoga takes inspiration from her movement background of competitive gymnastics and ballet (to Senior Honours level) as well as Vinyasa and Forrest Yoga, and anatomy and physio experts. She is fascinated by the connection between the mind and the body, particularly in relation to regulating the nervous system for managing stress & anxiety.
Alongside her 200 hr yoga teacher training, Sian has undertaken additional formal training in whole body strength & mobility and modern Vinyasa with world-renowned Vinyasa yoga teacher Jason Crandell, sequencing with Jason and with Adam Husler; and applied anatomy with Dr Yogi. In February 2024 Sian also became accredited as a breathwork and meditation teacher after completing the 100 hours Just Breathe level 1 training with global teacher Michael James Wong.
“I suffer with arthritis, particularly in my neck & back (spondylosis & stenosis). Sian’s approach to yoga concentrates on strengthening muscles to support the bones! The focus is on what you can do, rather than what you can’t!
Her approach is challenging but sensitive and she has a great sense of what I am capable of, pushing just far enough. I am in my 70s and now have more flexibility than in earlier years when I was a regular sportsman.
I strongly recommend Sian to anyone who wants to take steps to tackle the supposed limitations of arthritis and similar conditions in an enjoyable way“
